One More Bite Blog: Food Truck 411

Food Truck 411

Food trucks - obviously there are a ton, all over L.A. These are just the ones I've tried and/or liked / think I will like. Track them down via Twitter!

MAIN FARE:

Bowers Gourmet Sausages - sausages "prepared, seasoned and produced with a blend of fresh, natural ingredients...without any preservatives".  Loved their basil chicken sausage and the aptly named 'crack fries'! They also have a bacon-wrapped sausage cheekily named 'The Chubby' - that is actually delicious ($6-$12)

The Bun Truck - concept is Korean + Mediterrenean fusion fare, the most interesting of which is the Spicy Pig, a 'sammie' made of gochujang marinated pork with sriracha and tzatziki sauces wrapped in a pita.  They also have 'bao' (white pillowy bread buns) with kalbi (korean bbq shortrib) and tempura onion fries! ($3-$7)

Buttermilk Truck - breakfast sammiches, chicken and waffles, and Hawaiian Bread Cinnamon French Toast Sticks.  My favorites are: awesome Red Velvet Choc Chip Pancake Bites and Southwest Veggie Omelette with Housemade Cornbread!!! (~$2.50-$7)

Cafe Con Leche - Cuban cuisine and party on wheels, with Cuban music adding a festive flavor to the mobile eatery packed with specialty sandwiches, salads (~$6.50-$8) and coffee drinks.  I had the Pan Con Croqueta (Cuban bread with croquettes filled with beef, pork, and Cuban sofrito, grilled onions, tomatoes and special sauce).  The fillings were flavorful, but the bread was average, a bit smushed and could have been served at a warmer temperature.  Also had a Malta Condensada, which I would have enjoyed, but that it was served in the dirtiest styrofoam cup I have ever touched - not sure if the stains were from hands recently in touch with coffee grinds, but some of the black marks did not come off when wiped with tissues.  That was $11 I would have much rather spent on much tastier chicken balls from LudoTruck.

Calbi BBQ - Korean BBQ meat tacos, burritos, quesadillas and more. Big portion sizes, but definitely not in the same league as the original Kogi, and some people aren't a fan of egg inside the burritos. Also, disappointing as a foodie to know Calbi had been bought out by Baja Fresh (~$4-$7)

Dosa Truck - South Indian street food, including savory crepes (try the "Slumdog"!), and samosas (~$2-$8)

Eggslut Truck - best eggs in LA, truck or otherwise.  Incredible that they can prepare a 63 degree-like coddled egg in a jar from a truck. It sits over amazing potato puree, with a bit of grey salt on top, served with thin toasts.  Forget the gimmicky name - the food really will give new meaning to the word 'foodgasm'.

Flying Pig Truck - French-Asian fusion - pork belly in 'bao' buns, carne asada tacos with death sauce and beef and pork sliders have made me a believer! My only comment is they need to make the portions much bigger...

Germany's Famous Bratwurst - So.many.kinds.of.bratwurst sizzling fresh off the grill.  Love the Berlin Currywurst (~$3.50-$5).  Also offers sauerkraut and random dishes likely designed to appeal to folks just accompanying friends who are fans of bratwurst - e.g. spaghetti bolognese and noodle salad.  Berlin Currywurst was good, but know that the curry part consists of powder sprinkled on top of bratwurst.

The Grilled Cheese Truck - the name says it all! Also serving mac and cheese with optional bbq pork and caramelized onions, shots of tomato soup, tater tots and dessert melts (~$3-$7.50)

Grindhaus LA - Houseground sausages inspired by seasonal ingredients!  Pun on grindhouse films v. appropriate for its Hollywood store location and now mobile kitchen.  Loved the duck sausage stuffed with tart cherries and semi-sweet chocolate, served over swiss chard, smoked cauliflower and bacon lardons ($7-$9) - add hand-cut fries to any sandwiches or plates for $3.

KogiBBQ - The truck that started it all...REALLY flavorful Korean BBQ meat/tofu tacos, burritos, kimchi quesadillas and more...(~$2-$7)

Lardon - all about the BACON. And the nicest owners ever!  (Just the idea of this truck has me reduced to the single-track-mind puppy from those Beggin' Strips commercials!) Love the bacone, frisee sandwich and bacon brownie, especially. (~$4-$6)

LobstaTruck - the only food truck to focus on lobster. Amazingly fresh lobster flown in from New England, on perfectly buttered and toasted New England traditional split top rolls (can ask for butter or mayo).  The crab roll is also pretty amazing.  Smart to serve their seafood rolls with fresh Lemonade.  New England clam chowder also offered but always sell out (~$9-$12)

LudoTruck amazing fried chicken by Time Magazine's "Chef of the Future" Ludo Lefebvre, who has trained for more than a decade at multiple Michelin 3-star restaurants.  Flavors are BOLD with marketing tactics to match (exhibit A - red truck featuring giant red...rooster).  Loved the Provencal Pepitte - possibly the best fried chicken I've ever had - which are described as "juicy boneless chicken balls prepared over three days. Infused with rosemary and herbs de provence."  ($8.25 for 2 pieces + side of slaw + fries).  Freshest tasting slaw ever as free side.  Even the drinks are an adventure for your taste buds - the Basil Blood Orange Aguas Frescas is like nothing I've ever tasted. Not a fan of the Lavendar Biscuit (aka hockey puck drenched in sticky syrup) though.

Mandoline Grill - tender, juicy, deliciously fatty and incredibly flavorful pork Bahn Mi (the baguette's not amazing but the fillings are!).  They also serve fusion items like Vietnamese Tacos and Nachos ($5-$7); vegan friendly options also offered, but I need to have my meat, so didn't try these.

Nom Nom Truck - Bahn Mi baguette sandwiches, Vietnamese tacos (~$2.50-$6.50)

Phamish - Vietnamese Bahn Mi baguette sandwiches, pho, bun (~$5-$7)

Porchetta Truck  - temporary endeavor by Chef Evan Funke, who has headed up Rustic Canyon and Milo & Olive, and is waiting for permits to open up the new Bucato restaurant in Culver City.  This truck serves just two food items: Porchetta sandwich with pesto Modenese and chicharrones (fried pork skin) and arugula ($5) and Porchetta sandwich with fried egg ($7).  Both are insanely delicious - grab one while you can, else they should be serving this at Bucato when it opens.

The Poutine Truck - specializes in modern take on French Canadian specialty dish, classically made with fries topped with gravy and cheese curds. I've tried the Lardon & Frites made with apple smoked bacon, with Brown Onion gravy and firehouse cheese curds, and liked how unexpectedly light and non-greasy yet flavorful it is! Can't wait to try the Old School Veloute gravy next made with chicken broth and wine!!! ($5-$9)  They also serve fried cheese curds on their own!!!

Tainamite Truck - pan-Asian offerings.  I've only tried one dish here and it's really good for a food truck - and definitely not something I can get easily in West LA if not for this truck: Chinese Sausage Fried Rice with fried egg! (~$6.50-$9)

Takoyaki Tanota - specially grilled balls  with egg and flour shell, filled with octopus, green-onion, and tempura-soup base mix, topped with original sauce, mayo and green onion! (~$3-$5)

Umami Burger - mobile branch of amazing concept "fine-dining fast food" burger joint that makes use of our 'fifth taste' of umami (5th after sweet, sour, salt, bitter).

Willoughby Road - "classic southern cuisine redefined" including smoked fried ribs, pulled pork sandwich, twice fried chicken, and my fav off menu item, Fried Grit Cake!!! BIG on flavor!!! ($6-$10)

DESSERT:
COOLHAUS - Architecture inspired handmade all-natural ice cream sammiches - choose your cookies and ice cream with flavors like orange julius shulman, coffee toffee, brown butter with candied bacon, and even foie gras with pepper and hazelnut, with a cool (and eco-friendly) edible wrapper! ($4-$7).  My absolute fav, that is like crack to me?  Balsamic Fig with Mascarpone ice cream, with apple fritter cookies.  Second fav = Pistachio Truffle!  Rotating flavors always offer a pleasant surprise - I've pretty much loved almost every flavor I've ever tried from them, including Strawberry Jalapeno. Also loved Lycee Vodka at their promotional Mozilla Firefox giveaway.  Nutella is also amazing.

Lake Street Creamery - Nostalgic, soda-fountain feel but serves up super creative ice creams in waffle bowls and wooden spoons to minimize waste!  Love their "Pancake Breakfast" and "The Don Draper" ice creams, and Orange Blossom float.  Love the very affordable prices as well!  (1 scoop $4, 2 scoops $6, 3 scoops $8; floats $6)
